Greenaway's adult take on The Little Mermaid

An adult interpretation of the classic fairy-tale The Little Mermaid from British director Peter Greenaway opens tonight.

Mr Greenaway, director of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover and The Pillow Book, has collaborated with Istvan Horkay and Irma de Vries to produce a series of Seven Nursery Tales made for multi-screen environments.

The artists have taken seven familiar stories with their themes of love, lust, temptation, revenge, fetishism, hate, envy and punishment which are centred on the desirable virgin, and brought them into the adult world.

The Little Mermaid installation will be screened across five synchronised projectors on a 15-metre wide screen.

Mr Greenaway will be opening the exhibition from Amsterdam via Skype video. The Little Mermaid is presented by Manning Clark House and the ANU School of Art.
